Late Night Consoling
The latest edition of the Game Over column over at CNN/Money deals with Xbox Live, and raises some interesting questions. Possibly the most important thing mentioned here is that contrary to popular belief, Microsoft has not formalized the cost of a subscription to Xbox Live as of yet. A decision will be made in the next few weeks, and no doubt announced at E3, but this does raise all kinds of concerns. The first year of XBL cost a mere $50, and included the communicator. But let's be honest here...has there been a game yet that would justify spending as much as $10 a month? Particularly, and here's the rub, if you intend to play something like Phantasy Star Online, which requires an additional subscription after its initial time expires. I can honestly say that if it costs more than $50 a year, I will not be renewing my subscription. It's simply not worth it to me. I'm sure I'll start it back up again if/when a major game comes out that I'd like to play online (read: Halo 2) but that's a long way off. And if the biggest Xbox Live game this year really does turn out to be Counter-Strike...well...no matter how many people bought that initial Xbox Live package, Microsoft's going to have a hard time keeping those subscribers.

Another Rare Game? While this is far from anything resembling a confirmation, the latest Scribes Q&A at Rare's site says, "if anyone believes that a developer the size of Rare would only be working on one game at a time, well... having lost all faith in humanity long ago, I suppose I wouldn't be surprised." | |
